The Astar Knot
The Astar Knot
Thursday 15th October 2026
Service Description
I first taught this design in 2017 at the National Association of Wheat Weavers in Indianapolis. It's called the Astar Knot, Astar means travel or journey in Gaelic and the plaits seem to travel around each other. It has a feel of a Cetic Knot. This also has another meaning for me but you will have to come to the class to find that one out. In this class I will show you the Chequerboard Flat Plait, how it is made, how to join on straws and how to turn corners with the plait. We will use a finer plait to weave in and out of your design. I will show you how to put the elements together to give a pleasing wall piece. This online class will come to you on Zoom and will be recorded. You will receive a link to the recording the day after the class. You can use this link for as long as you would like. Materials Required 40-50 Medium thickness plaiting straws with heads (dampened if you are working along with me in class) 1 Florist wire 18 gauge, 20cm/8" in length Strong Thread Small Pair of Craft Scissors Straw Splitter (6 Splitter if possible) Ruler Dog Comb or Spreuer former Glue gun and glue stick (optional) Pinboard and Dressmakers' pins Kit will contain - All straws required Florist wire
